The UK’s greenest road ever

The Lower Thames Crossing Project in the UK is showing what can already be done in sustainability in major infrastructure projects. There are three planks to Matt Palmer, Andrew Kidd and the team’s approach, which Andrew spoke about at the Innovation Zero conference in London in May.

  1. Design to reduce impacts on the community and the environment

  2. Take carbon out of construction - pushing the boundaries in procurement, design and construction

  3. Bring communities closer to nature, creating opportunities for skills and jobs.

So far the project has delivered:

  • 1.32MtnCO2 reduction in carbon (around 50% reduction from 2020 baseline)

  • Over 200 engagement events

  • Over £20 million invested in community projects

  • 87,500 trees planted at Hole Farm

  • 2,924 hours of Carbon Training delivered

They’re also ‘creating the market’ for zero emissions construction fleet. As Andrew says - they’re creating and doing things that nobody thought possible, and industry is rising to the challenge.

We caught up with Andrew in London in May, and can talk to you directly if you’d like more.
